Burma update
October 1, 2007 by K.
| Thousands of protesters are dead and the bodies of hundreds of executed monks have been dumped in the jungle, a former intelligence officer for Burma’s ruling junta has revealed.
The most senior official to defect so far, Hla Win, said: “Many more people have been killed in recent days than you’ve heard about. The bodies can be counted in several thousand.”
Mr Win, who spoke out as a Swedish diplomat predicted that the revolt has failed, said he fled when he was ordered to take part in a massacre of holy men. |
| Word reaching dissidents hiding out on the border suggested that as well as executions, some 2,000 monks are being held in the notorious Insein Prison or in university rooms which have been turned into cells. |
| “People are scared and the general assessment is that the fight is over. We were informed from one of the largest embassies in Burma that 40 monks in the Insein prison were beaten to death today and subsequently burned.” |

To tell the truth, I really haven’t formulated a view on this whole Myanmar thing yet, other than obviously, it sucks, and once again a totalitarian government is out of hand (and being judged by our Western standards shared neither by that government nor by the monks in question, by the way). I do think this has very little to do with their being Buddhist monks; and moreover, if I understand correctly this whole thing started over fuel oil prices? which makes a lot more sense.
That, plus, I don’t really believe anything I hear on most news, and that makes me anything but a current affairs junkie.
I do think Brad Warner’s take on the real situation – which is our perception and participation in the Myanmar situation – is worth considering. It’s at http://suicidegirls.com/news/contributors/brad_warner/.
whatever…
A.L.: Now, there’s a helpful comment. Care to expound on that?
Not a problem with your personal comments, but to this
